John Maniezzo

“At Eglinton and Weston Road, the air is thick with the rich smells from Betty's Jam Factory and when you hear the noon whistle at Kodak, you might think for a minute of getting of the trolley to have a soda at Jolley's a building that formerly housed Goddard's Hall on the north east corner of Hollis and Weston just north of Eglinton. Goddard's Hall was supposed to be the Mount Dennis Town, Hall but was defeated. Mount Dennis first library was a Goddard's Hall before moving to an upstairs room at the Bugrush Theare – or the Mount Dennis Theatre. Just east of Jolly's is the land old Joe Smith donated to build the community's first fire hall; it's the Mount Dennis Community Centre today. As you pass Inch's Drug store, formerly the Balford Drug store, you might think of the Saturday nights and weekly dances held above the store. And then there's the old Marshall homestead sitting on Weston Rd as it has since 1870, first a farmhouse, then the area's first post office, the a bakeshop, grocery store, butcher shop, general store and half way house for people heading to Toronto.”

Linda Stokes

My great grandfather was one of first Eastman brought to Toronto to start Kodak then my mom and Dad worked there. It was a big family oriented company and lots of employee clubs...golfing , bowling, theatre and I remember a great family Christmas with Santa in the auditorium and he gave out the biggest oranges I had ever seen ! Just think though the 1976 article and not long after that the personal photography business started to collapse and Kodak didn’t recognize the future of computers and photos. How life can change. Now the land is where the new Eglinton subway will terminate at the rail tracks connect to airport train route”
Steve Tiveron

“Mt Dennis a magical place.
Growing up in Mt Dennis felt special. My Mother who was born in the area and then brought up 8 kids used to tell us all the memories she had as a child. She used to tell me many stories about the place, and stores that used to be there but no longer exsisted when I was a kid but some were still hanging on. Growing up in this little community in a larger city felt safe and was kid friendly. Parents would congregate after dinner to watch the kinds play on streets, kids would run over lawns and play in backyards and have lemonade stands in the summer. No matter what part of Mt Dennis you lived you lived and played in the same places as everyone else. We all hung out at Dairy Queen or worked there at one time, went to the movies down the street, went tobogganing down Eglinton flats or Jasper park. grabbed a slice at Kids pizza for .25 cents and the next day went to Dragon house for a cone of french fries. You got your hair cut at a local baber shop, maybe Tony's or the other guy. When you needed pants or dresses hemmed you went to the guy across from Dragon house. You may have gone to Cordella, or OLV or Mt Dennis but after school you probably played street hockey or tag or jumped rope. Mt Dennis was just a place we lived but in reality it was magical and there are so many memories that you could fill the Mt Dennis Library with. I often think of growing up there and really believe that there was no other place like it. Times have changed and we all grew up and moved on but if you are like me you will never forget this place, the way it was the way it felt and the special memories you carry with you for the rest of your life. Mt Dennis really was a special place all on its own and I'm glad I grew up there, I just hope that the generations after us have the same attachment but I am afraid it won't be the same.”
