Playground

1177 Weston Rd.
Accessible recreational space for the North east portion of the neighborhood
Relates to the adjacent senior program and community hall

The issues
In 1974, the 100-year former Marshall family homestead and later a mini-commercial center was demolished and replaced by a parking lot. This decision has greatly mystified me. Maybe it’s due to the increased traffic flow created by the flop highway project but overall, it has broken the continuity of the commercial strip and now sits mostly empty.
The opportunity
Mt. Dennis has always been a hub for immigrant families with young children. However, this environment has deteriorated greatly since the late 1980s. While the rest of neighborhood can have access to playgrounds, the Northeastern area is cut off from the rest by the railway and Weston Rd. With the imminent densification of this area (the proposed apartment on Locust Ave.), a playground is essential and will form a social-spatial connection with the adjacent senior service center at 1167 Weston and community hall at 4 Hollis Street.
